The Night the Power Went Out in Maadi

The power had been out for six hours when Mrs. Fawzy brought her old kerosene lamp down to the street. One by one, neighbors who had barely exchanged greetings in years pulled out chairs, tea, and stories. By midnight, the street looked like it had thirty years ago. When the lights finally came back, nobody rushed inside.
